EU authorities relax recommendations on wearing masks in airplanes Free press

Cologne / Berlin.

Responsible EU authorities are relaxing their recommendations on protection against air traffic crowns.

Among other things, from this Monday, the general recommendation to wear medical masks at airports and airplanes will no longer apply, as announced Wednesday by the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA and the EU health authority ECDC. If there is a government obligation to wear masks in public transport at the departure or destination, it should continue to apply on board the aircraft as per the recommendation. In Germany, the general obligation to wear masks on airplanes will remain for the time being. However, the aviation industry is now demanding its abolition.

In response to a question in Berlin, the Federal Ministry of Health explained that the national authorities decide on the obligation to wear masks. Consequently, it continues to apply to all domestic routes and flights in Germany that take off from or land in Germany. Accordingly, FFP2 or medical masks must be worn when boarding and disembarking and throughout the flight. You can only lose it by eating and drinking. Children under six are exempt from the obligation.

The nationwide requirement for masks on airplanes – as well as on long-distance trains – is initially set out in the Infection Protection Act until September 23. Masks are also mandatory on local public transport with buses and trains ordered by the Länder. In France, the requirement for masks on public transport ends early next week, Health Minister Olivier Véran said. Nevertheless, wearing a mask is recommended. The health situation has improved, but the pandemic is not over. As for air travel to a country where masks are still mandatory, Véran said the airlines were responsible.

European Aviation Safety Agency chief Patrick Ky said masks would no longer be compulsory in all cases from next week. For passengers and crews, it is a big step towards normalizing air traffic. At the same time, both EU bodies stressed that wearing a face mask is still one of the best means of protection against corona.

The reason for the mitigation is therefore the latest pandemic events. These include the number of vaccinations, the immunity generated by infections and the associated lifting of restrictions in an increasing number of European countries.

Aviation approval

Aviation welcomed the new recommendations. The federal government should use this as an opportunity and now abolish the requirement to carry masks on board aircraft, said the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry. Other countries have already given up travel requirements and the obligation to wear a mask. A spokeswoman for Lufthansa said: “It’s time to rely on voluntariness, which is now the norm in other areas of everyday life, such as the supermarket or restaurant.” In the plane, high-performance filters constantly clean the air in the cabin.

The International Airline Association (IATA) has concluded that the requirements for masks on board planes should disappear once masks are no longer compulsory in other areas of everyday life – such as theaters, offices and public transport. (dpa)
