With a flourish and optimism, the main conductor Alan Gilbert and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra begin a new season into new times.

Together with the renowned soloists and the combined forces of the NDR Vocal Ensemble and Rundfunkchor Berlin, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will play the traditional premiere night of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, one of the greatest symphonies in the repertoire.

Porgy and Bess & Elbphilharmonie Visions

2022/23 is also a season of long-awaited premieres: The new festival “Elbphilharmonie Visions At the beginning. Every two years, the Elbphilharmonie and NDR present the best contemporary works for ten days in a young concert hall on the Elbe. According to Alan Gilbert, “a snapshot of the current world of music.” He is the initiator of the festival and will conduct the inaugural concert, during which will be held, among others premiere of a new piece by Lisa Streich. There are also works by Brett Dean, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, Hans Abrahamsen and John Adams.

Another concert attraction: after the outstanding success of Dvořák Rusalka is conducted by Alan Gilbert from The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess Another brilliant opera work – at SHMF, in Lucerne and in the Great Hall of the Elbphilharmonie as part of the International Music Festival in Hamburg. A group of eminent opera stars from the Metropolitan Opera in New York will appear on stage.

New Year’s Eve: Boulanger & Bonds meet Strauss and Ravel

The traditional New Year’s Eve concert by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will be broadcast live from the Elbphilharmonie on the first day on December 31st. Alan Gilbert chose a special program for the musical event of concerts around New Year’s Eve: songs by George Gershwin and the little-known Chicago composer Margeret Bonds, with the exciting African-American soprano Julia Bullock, the orchestra by the Frenchwoman Lili Boulanger, who died young Richard, and happy and Maurice Ravel.

End of the season with a new star in the violin sky: Maria Duenas plays Lalo

She is considered one of the greatest emerging talents: 18-year-old violinist María Dueñas from Spain. Together with the NDR Orchestra, Elbphilharmonie will perform Edouard Lalo’s virtuoso “Symphonie espagnole” at the end of the season in June 2023. Alan Gilbert will also conduct Richard Strauss’s Don Juan, Maurice Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso and Igor Stravinsky’s Der Feuervogel.

Other concerts with the chief conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra include Mahler’s seventh, “Great” symphony in C major by Schubert, “Prague” by Mozart, “Pathetic” by Tchaikovsky and the monumental symphonic poem “Pelleas and Melisande” by Schoenberg.

Focus on the multiverse: Esa-Pekka Salonen

As part of the two-year “Multiversum Salonen”, the exceptional Finnish artist returns to the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra for two more programs in the double role of conductor and composer. With Yaja Wang as an outstanding soloist, they both present a new piano concerto by Salonen’s friend and compatriot, Magnus Lindberg, commissioned by NDR; accompanied by Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6. Salonen brought his own new work to the second program. The titular organist Iveta Apkalna will play her organ concert on the spectacular Elbphilharmonie surround instrument, and Salonen will also conduct works by Sibelius, Berlioz and Scriabin.

Blomstedt to Yashima: Big Names and “Rising Stars”

On the podium of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the 2022/23 audience can expect famous masters such as Herbert Blomstedt (with Nielsen’s Fifth) and Christoph Eschenbach (with Bruckner’s Third), the returns of Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Andris Poga, Mikko Franck and Jukka-Pekka Saraste, but also the debuts of the rising conductor Erina Yashima, Stanisław Kochanowski and Duncan Ward. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra continues its constant cooperation with podium stars Sakari Oramo, Paavo Järvi, Pablo Heras-Casado and Marek Janowski. In addition, Manfred Honeck returns returned to the orchestra’s podium with the famous concert project “A Requiem – Mozart and death in words and music”; the speaker part is clearly occupied by Matthias Brandt.

World-class soloists

Many other world-class soloists will also accept the invitation of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in 2022/2023: the guest performance of Nina Stemme from Wesendonck-Lieder and Matthias Goerne from Mahler’s Wunderhorn-Lieder should be a special event for fans of great voices. You can also expect a large part of the international cello elite: Alisa Weilerstein, Steven Isserlis, Daniel Müller-Schott, Gautier Capucon and Pablo Ferrandez. Among the guests are also pianists Leif Ove Andsnes, Lucas & Arthur Jussen and Rudolf Buchbinder, as well as violinists Alina Pogostkina, Leonidas Kavakos, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider and the great associate of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Augustin Hadelich. Concertmaster Roland Greutter will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto from his ranks during his farewell season.

On the way in northern Germany

In addition to numerous concerts at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra will of course be present again throughout the broadcast area in 2022/23. In addition to a series of concerts in Lübeck, Kiel and Wismar, it plays a key role at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Usedom Music Festival. The orchestra also makes a guest appearance at the Lucerne International Festival with “Porgy and Bess” under the baton of Alan Gilbert.
