Delete WhatsApp messages without reading them

Fortunately, deleting WhatsApp messages is easy and only requires a few clicks. If you don’t want your recipient to know you opened their messages before deleting them, here are some tips on how to do that. Our screenshots were taken for the Android version, but the steps also work on iPhones.

Turn off read receipts and delete WhatsApp messages

A read receipt ensures that your chat partners can see the blue tick when you read their messages. If you turn off read receipts (temporarily), you can delete a message so that your chat partner cannot see that you have read it.

Delete entire WhatsApp chats

In WhatsApp, you can delete entire chats without opening them. You can also delete messages that you don’t want to open at the same time. Of course, the rest of the messages also disappear with this method.

Delete WhatsApp messages in airplane mode

Read receipts are only sent in WhatsApp if there is also an internet connection. Therefore, you can simply put your smartphone into airplane mode to block all calls and delete unread messages easily.

Quick Guide: Disable read receipts

  1. In WhatsApp, open the menu with three vertical points in the top right corner and select “settings“. For iPhone, go directly to “in the lower right cornersettings“.
  2. Then tap “bill” and next “Privacy“.
  3. Now turn off the slider in “read receipts“so that it appears gray.
  4. Then you can open the chat where you want to delete the message. Long press the message to be deleted presseduntil the menu appears, then tap paper basket.
  5. Then tap “delete for me“To delete a message without officially reading it.

Quick Start Guide: Airplane Mode

  1. Activate Airplane mode on the smartphone, for example by using the shortcut w Control Center or in the settings under “Network and Internet” or “cufflinks“obtain.
  2. In the active airplane mode, you can open the desired chat in WhatsApp and delete the corresponding message there. Therefore keep Hold until a menu appears, and then select trash can icon.
  3. Then confirm by clicking on “delete for me” type.
