However, non-material support is at least as important to her. She learned leadership and class management at seminars led by a scholarship holder – “this is never taught in university,” says the 24-year-old.
Managed Social Projects
During her year abroad, she managed social projects. Proof of this was submitted with her CV and cover letter as a scholarship application. She heard nothing for a long time, then came an invitation to the selection process in Bremen, to an initial interview. She then had a “very bad feeling,” says the confident young woman.

In the case of large organizations promoting young talent in Germany, the support is not only financial, but also non-material. Foundations offer educational seminars on a wide range of social, political, cultural or scientific topics, some of which are compulsory. party foundations they usually support young people in a spirit appropriate to the party: The foundations of the main parties in Germany are the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (SPD), the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (CDU), the Heinrich Böll Foundation (Greens), the Friedrich-Naumann Foundation (FDP) and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation ( left).
Church foundations These include the Cusanuswerk of the Catholic Church, the Protestant Studienwerk, Ernst-Ludwig-Ehrlich-Studienwerk, which supports Jewish students, and the Muslim Avicenna Foundation. In addition to large gifted organizations, there are many small and very small foundations, some of which offer highly specialized scholarships, for example for students with disabilities (Anni and Keyvan Dahesch Foundation), with a migrant background (Turkish Community in Germany) or with refugee status (German University Foundation ).
For example, the Stipendium Plus page at stipendiumplus.de provides an overview
Assmann is currently studying for a Master’s degree. He already says: “The Foundation gave me an amazing amount.” In her case, for example, people are encouraged not to think about post-graduate education, but about getting a PhD. “Or if I could say I don’t want to be a government official.”
Scholar Network
As a rule, scholarship holders of the German Business Foundation must attend one seminar and one additional seminar for each year of study. There is also a one-week academic party. After these events, she feels “very, very inspired”. She especially appreciates the network of “great community” scholarship holders.
She advises students and young students: “Everyone who is socially involved and wants to change something should apply. It’s a great opportunity – it makes a difference and you become part of the network. “
