A survey by Business of Fashion earned PUMA top marks for water and chemicals, labor rights and transparency, and PUMA improved its emissions performance compared to the previous year. Overall, PUMA scored 49 out of 100, well above the average of 28.

“We are delighted to be recognized and included in the Fashion Business Sustainability Index 2022, and will use our leadership position to continue to pursue our sustainability strategy,” said Bjrn Gulden, PUMA CEO. “We agree with the survey that our industry still has a long way to go to meet the Paris Climate Goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

As part of Forever Better’s sustainability strategy, PUMA announced a month ago that the company will cut CO emissions between 2017 and 20212-Decrease of emissions from own sources (-88%) and the supply chain (-12%) despite strong sales growth.

To achieve this goal, PUMA has focused on purchasing 100% renewable energy with green electricity tariffs and certifications, converting vehicle fleets into electric drives, using more sustainable materials in its products, and implementing efficiency programs with supply chain partners.

To ensure transparency in the supply chain, PUMA has published a list of its Tier 1 suppliers, as well as the most important Tier 2 suppliers and selected Tier 3 suppliers.

For water and chemicals, PUMA has released wastewater testing results from its wet processing suppliers, improving compliance with industry standards such as ZDHC’s Wastewater Quality Guidelines.

PUMA is working with the Fair Work Association and the ILO’s Better Work Program to improve labor rights in its supply chain – an issue that has played an important role since the first Code of Conduct in 1993. PUMA collects and publishes salary data and other social indicators in its annual report.
