Will there be a nationwide public transport ticket soon?

Among other things, the general manager of municipalities, Gerd Landsberg, is appealing for a nationwide discounted public transport ticket. However, there are still many obstacles to overcome before that happens.

The € 9 ticket has sold more than seven million times so far. As recently announced, the € 9 ticket is not valid on all trains operated by DB Fernverkehr AG. For example, you cannot use a cheap ticket to travel with ICE. In general, attention should be paid to whether the rail link has an IC number or an RE number. In turn, all trains operated by DB Regio can be used with a ticket of 9 euros. Inspired by the success of the ticket, the municipalities are now demanding that a similar ticket for public transport be offered in the future.

Municipal operators determine the prices of public transport tickets

After all, the 9 euro ticket is only available for three months up to and including August 2022. After this time, some customers fear that bus and rail companies may react with price increases to refinance increased electricity and fuel costs. Until now, public transport companies have determined the costs of public transport tickets on the spot. In some projects, the federal government pays money, in others the federal states and municipalities act individually so that no one feels primarily responsible. The general manager of municipalities, Gerd Landsberg, explained in an interview with Handelsblatt that public transport requires a nationally valid, uniform and discounted ticket. It is not known if this ticket will cost nine euros.

According to the interim head of the Federation of Consumer Organizations, Jutta Gurkmann, consistently low ticket prices are important to “strengthen public transport and retain passengers in the long term.” Consequently, the federal government should support a moratorium on bus and train prices. Another option could be beneficiary financing where employers, retailers or individuals contribute financially. The decisive factor here is the increase in the value of the property thanks to good transport connections. On the other hand, Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) makes it clear that more federal funding for public transport will only come if structural reforms are implemented. The desired option is the 365 euro annual ticket for regional public transport. However, whether there is such an offer nationwide is completely open. For example, business wise Veronika Grimm is firmly against cheap public transport tickets for every citizen and calls for restrictions only for young people. A federal state working group is currently advising on the future of public transport.
