Although years ago they were only available in the US, now they can be found in almost every corner of Germany. Donut recipe: this is how it works without a donut maker and no fryer

Ingredients for 12 donuts

  • 450 grams of flour
  • 1 packet of dry yeast
  • 180 grams of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 of an organic lemon
  • 2 eggs
  • 125 grams of softened butter
  • 200 milliliters of milk

Apart from that:

  • flour to the work surface
  • coconut oil (or frying oil)
  • 6 tablespoons of powdered sugar

Prepare the donut dough

  1. In a bowl, combine flour and dry yeast. Add sugar, salt, lemon zest, eggs, softened butter and lukewarm milk. First knead the dough hook of the hand mixer and then use your hands to form a smooth dough.
  2. Cover and set aside in a warm place for about 1 hour, until the dough increases significantly in volume. Knead the dough vigorously on a lightly floured surface and roll it out to about 1/2 cm thick. Using floured donut molds (or round cookie cutters Ø 8 cm), cut 8 pieces of dough (with a Ø 2 cm hole in the center).
  3. Cover and set aside for about 30 minutes. Heat the frying oil in a deep frying pan (it is at the right temperature when bubbles are formed in the hot oil). Fry the donuts for about 2 minutes on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Coat the donuts in the sieved powdered sugar.

What to cut donuts with?

Make yourself donuts in a deep fryer

About 1-2 liters of vegetable fat are needed to bake donuts in the deep fryer. Put in a deep fryer or alternatively in a large saucepan and heat to 190 degrees. You can use a kitchen thermometer to determine the temperature – most fryers have a built-in temperature display. As soon as the temperature is reached, gradually put the cut donut dough into the hot fat – best with a slotted spoon – and fry for about 1 minute on each side. Then remove the donuts and drain them on paper towels.

Can you make donuts in the oven?

Basically yes. However, the typical flavor and texture of a donut only appears during frying.

They work best in the oven if you bake them on a baking tray with donuts. This way they get their typical shape. Just brush some fat on the molds, add the dough and let it rise in the mold, covered, for about 20 minutes. Then, depending on the size of the donut, bake them for about 15-20 minutes at 150 ° C (top / bottom heating) until golden brown.
