The Recoro company, which has emerged from a research project at the University of Augsburg, will in the future be funded by the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection. The startup founders and their mentor, prof. Schuller, they managed to win the competition for the coveted Exist grant. Augsburg-based IT startup Recoro has developed a smart assistant for sales teams that increases sales success in virtual conversations and trains employees based on data.

Recoro’s artificial intelligence analyzes real-time sales calls and gives salespeople easy-to-implement verbal, non-verbal and substantive communication tips that they can apply immediately. The software can be flexibly integrated into the company’s existing digital infrastructure and also offers new opportunities to train your own employees through transparent feedback.

Mentoring by the university

The foundation for software development was laid by the research project causAI from the Chair for Embedded Intelligence for Health Care and Wellbeing (EIHW) at the University of Augsburg, which also deals with the AI ​​analysis of speech, gestures and expression faces. The chair is held by prof. dr inż. habilitation. Björn Schuller, who accompanies Recoro as tutor in program development. Schuller and his team focus on sensor-based and knowledge-based monitoring and checking all health-related parameters in sports and other activities. The aim of her research is to use the latest achievements of computer science in practical medicine.

More than academic support

However, the university’s support for a start-up goes beyond scientific supervision. In close cooperation with StartHub, the start-up center of the University of Augsburg, Recoro founders Lukas Stappen, Julian Speckmaier and Mykyta Denysov managed to get funding for their innovative project from an Exist start-up grant from the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection. Recoro’s founding team combines economic and technological expertise which has greatly contributed to the success of the Exist funding selection process. In addition to Stappen, who has already worked as a research assistant at Schuller at the University of Augsburg and will soon be finishing his PhD there, Mykyta Denysov is also an expert in artificial intelligence. Julian Speckmaier worked for several years as an innovation strategy and business building consultant, complementing the team with his economic expertise.

Crown pandemic as an initiator

According to Speckmaier, the idea for the further development of the causAI and the spin-off Recoro research project was born during the crown pandemic and the associated accelerated digitization in medium-sized companies. According to a McKinsey survey, 46% of sales reps reported that the lack of direct interaction with customers led to a reduction in the efficiency of digital sales calls. “We realized that new technological approaches are needed in sales.” Speckmaier describes the starting situation.

Prototype improvement

Thanks to Exist funding, the founders of Recoro can now refine their prototype, which analyzes live verbal, non-verbal and content-related communication in a digital conversation. AI gives users feedback on pace and breaks as well as body language and conversation. “In addition, Recoro reduces error-prone, manual connectivity tasks with automated documentation and detailed analysis,” says Speckmaier.
