New CarPlay accesses digital instruments

“In the long run, Apple may completely take over the software in the cars”

We asked Lorenz Keller (43), an expert at the Ringier Gadget Portal daskannwas.ch:

Blick: Why does a tech company like Apple want access to an air conditioning system or know the speed?

Lorenz Keller: The strength of Apple in everything from iPhone to Apple Watch is the strong integration of software and hardware. Usually an American company wants to produce everything itself and thus also control it. As long as Apple doesn’t build cars itself, that’s not possible with cars. Nevertheless, the smartphone, as a central part of most people’s digital life, needs to be integrated as closely as possible into the vehicle. This only works if CarPlay is not just an additional application in the car, but a central system that can control everything.

How deeply does Apple penetrate the car makers’ data domain?

Tech makers are already collecting important information anyway, Google even more than Apple. Namely, where do you go and how often, at what times, and so on. However, of course, the case is that car makers run the risk of becoming pure hardware suppliers who may suddenly be forced to comply with CarPlay’s requirements.

How important is it for Apple to find known manufacturers as partners?

The car industry and Apple have common competitors: Tesla, for example, which is also strong when it comes to software and wants to control everything on its own. Or Chinese brands, some of which are even more entrenched in the digital world than classic car makers from Europe, the US, Japan and Korea.

Will the tech company go further?

I imagine Apple wants to completely take over the software from the models. In other words, when ordering, you can choose whether you want an Audi or a BMW with the manufacturer’s system or CarPlay – then the car is integrated into the Apple world like iPhone, iPad or Mac. I think Apple is also convinced that they can make software in the car better than the car manufacturers themselves – who have long slept on the subject.

What could this mean that an Apple car is about to arrive?

I believe that is unlikely in the next few years. There has been little progress in the last few years. The goal should be to integrate cars as closely as possible into the Apple world so that there is no reason to use anything else.
