According to the study, several factors have slowed the take-up of digital technologies and technical services in Europe. Medium-sized companies, which generally prefer internal development, dominate in most industries in the region. Some industries, such as the automotive and aviation industries, prefer to turn to their tightly knit networks of suppliers rather than large suppliers of engineering services. Most European companies develop products so highly specialized that their in-house engineering, electronics and software teams have to work closely together, which makes the widespread acquisition of technical skills difficult and complicated.

In the meantime, however, according to ISG, many industrial companies in the region are more motivated to face the digital transformation. Individual industries are automating as a result of high labor costs and increasing regulations, while at the same time using new technologies to meet the growing demand for highly personalized products.

In the European manufacturing industry, large corporations with huge plants are now implementing digital solutions to monitor, control and visualize all processes.
