Cameroon looks like Africa on a small scale. You will be surprised by the most varied landscapes and diversity of life. But conflicts between man and nature are also pervasive. Africa is home to the greatest wilderness on earth. The savannah is home to animals for which the continent is famous. Deserts dominate large areas, and our closest relatives live in a vast jungle. You can also find all of this in a small country: Cameroon. Dirk Steffens’ journey through “Africa in Miniature” begins in a dense jungle. Explorers and colonizers avoided this part of Africa – and for good reason. Tropical diseases, dangerous animals and uneven terrain lurk in the jungle. Getting there is also no easy task for Dirk Steffens and his team, but it’s worth it. Hardly any other area on our planet is so original. While looking for our closest animal relatives, Dirk Steffens has a special encounter with an old friend: twelve years ago, he met the silverback Macumba, a lowland gorilla. However, on his way through Cameroon, Dirk Steffens discovers not only the beautiful sides of Africa. The continent is not only home to innumerable wild animals, but also hunts them especially intensively. The pangolin is the only mammal with scales. Today it is the most hunted mammal in the world. The flesh is eaten and the husks are sold as medicine in Asia. When Dirk Steffens notices that a pangolin is selling alive on the street, he has to intervene. Some areas of Cameroon look like fantasy movie sets. No wonder that legends and stories have survived here. Many cruel myths should even come true. The legend tells of a cloud over the lake that is breathtaking. On August 21, 1986, deadly gases rose from Lake Nyos and suffocated 1,800 people. For years, scientists have wondered about the cause. Today it is clear that the geological processes that led to this catastrophe are still ongoing. The further north you go in Cameroon, the drier it gets. The savannah runs through the middle of the country and is home to giraffes, for example, which are only found here. Their protection is important, but their habitat is in areas where humans are also struggling to survive. The explosion of the population and neighboring countries shaken by the crises make it difficult to protect animals. Dirk Steffens takes the viewer on a unique journey through the landscapes of Cameroon and the history of Africa.
