“Quarry” in the test: murderous fun is possible without much horror!
Leipzig – After the huge success of “Until Dawn” (2015), horror fans can finally count on the release of a spiritual successor “Quarry“They are happy. New characters, new story, well-established concept. But does the calculation work a second time? DAY24 I tested it.
The very first scene captivates the player and creates an incredibly amazing atmosphere that gives a foretaste of the upcoming events: a couple is driving a car through a dark forest, suddenly something (or someone?) On the street. And then everything goes terribly wrong.
What exactly is behind all the strange events is, of course, still unknown. But curiosity is a little awakened.
In the best horror style for teenagers, the sequences of the approximately ten-hour-long game revolve around the keepers of a summer camp in the wasteland. The actions, words and decisions of these teenagers are entirely up to the player.
The Volkswagen Group continues to struggle with significant sales suppression
The caretakers have to spend an extra night in the camp due to a – not entirely accidental – engine failure. While they’re excited about the prospect of a recent party, fear is written on the landlord’s face: He definitely doesn’t want teens to be here on this full moon night.
Before you find out why, though, let’s start with party preparations, flirting trials, and exploratory excursions. So if you expected to get the answers right away and get thrown into the action, you might be disappointed: the (unfortunately too shallow) horror elements really start from the middle of the game. So patience is required.
It should be added, however, that, in my opinion, the attractiveness of “The Quarry” lies not only in its frightening nature. Instead, what makes the game super exciting is the plot: What is behind the events? Who can you trust, who is good and who is bad? Just getting to the bottom of the story and building your own new theories with each new clue makes it real fun.
A little horror movie, but still a lot of emotion
As mentioned above, “The Quarry” can certainly raise the stakes when it comes to horror. Aside from a few jumpscares, car chases, and scary noises, there’s really not much going on here.
The most frightening were the inadvertently bizarrely animated faces of the characters, which sometimes look quite realistic but the next moment they suddenly show funny faces. Especially Laura and Emma were negative in this regard.
So I can count on one hand how often I was scared or flinched – unfortunately far too little for a horror game.

QuickTime events, in which you have to jump up stairs, avoid attackers or make ducks, are also child’s play and do not pose much of a challenge, the creators could trust their players in these matters.
So while these points can make you wrinkle as you play the game, there are so many things The Quarry does well: on the one hand, there are multi-faceted characters that you like more and more as you progress and you even smile despite the dark events. Against a beautiful natural backdrop, people flirt, argue and laugh – just like you can imagine at a summer camp.
The heart of the game, as in “Until Dawn”, is still the decision-making power of the players. Whether you are strategic, aggressive or defensive, the consequences of your actions and words are immediate and can lead to the success or violent death of your character. Especially in situations where important decisions have to be made within seconds, heads can burn a lot. Kudo for these dilemmas!
Regarding horror, “The Quarry” unfortunately does not keep up with “Until Dawn” at all, rather the plot takes place through exploring and telling stories. Although, of course, the mood is still scary, I am convinced that scared cats can also easily master this game.
The all-new mode also offers the option of sitting and watching the action passively, like in a movie. In my opinion, it would be a real waste – it is far too much fun to explore the area around the camp, freely interact with other characters and fully immerse yourself in the plot.
It took a while for the story to really take off. But as The Quarry gathers speed, it has captivated the player so much that you don’t want to put down the controller and instead want to get to the bottom of all the secrets. Clear recommendation!
