Are registrations still possible?

Already three minutes after the opening of the registration list, the capacity of 1,100 starters was reached. Only in case of cancellation or no show there are places available. However, when registering online, a waiting list was created. Anyone who still wants a chance to start should arrive at the registration tent no later than 7:00 am on the day of the competition.

Registration and registration at Sundschwimmen is possible in the evening, Friday from 18:00 to 20:00 at the seaside resort. People unable to attend should do so on Saturday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Participants under 18 years of age should note that they should provide a parental consent form upon registration.

What do I need to consider as an appetizer?

Participants should arrive at the seaside resort in good time. As usual, buses to Altefaehr leave at 12:00 above the entrance to the DLRG building. At 1:00 p.m., the launch shot will be fired at the seaside resort of Altefaehr. Hence the question of finding the way for the next two kilometers along the route marked with buoys. About half an hour later, the first swimmers can be greeted on the Stralsund side. At the finish line, participants will be guided through various channels at the appropriate distance. What is allowed and what is not?

Vaseline and fat are recommended as protection against the cold. Swimwear is subject to the DSV competition regulations. For this reason, swimwear and wetsuits are not allowed. If the swimmer insists, he floats out of bounds. The issued orange bathing cap must also be worn throughout the competition. Losing here may also lead to disqualification. The timing transponder and competition number must also be worn attached to the body.

350 lifeguards and helpers from DLRG, DGzRS, ASB, DRK, THW, Marine, Ecolea and private persons are on duty on the water and on land on the day of the competition. Sailors who wish to accompany the swim with a lifeguard on board are also welcome. They should be at the Altefaehr pier by 12 noon at the latest.

It is also obligatory to use the Restube rescue buoy issued by the organizer. The participant wears a small rescue buoy packed in an extremely small pocket, e.g. on the hip. If a swimmer gets into trouble and pulls the trigger, he will inflate and provide support. By raising the arm or the rest of the pole, the competitor should signal that he cannot continue the match.

To approve the take-off, a water temperature of at least 16 degrees Celsius is also required, measured on the day of take-off at a depth of one meter in a seaside resort. If the competitor remains in the water for too long, the tournament doctor may also ask him to surrender.

Important and interesting facts about Sundschwimmen

Over 2,315 meters Sundschwimmen participants travel from the seaside resort of Altefaehr on the island of Rügen to the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. Traditionally, Germany’s oldest outdoor swimming competition is held on the first Saturday in July.

Participants come from mainly from Germany, then Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, France and also the USA. Most of the starters come from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as from Saxony and Berlin. Saarland is the only federal state not on the registration list this year.

Only twice in the past, the event had to be canceled. The disappointment that the start in 2011 was not possible due to weather conditions is unforgettable. In 2020, Sundschwimmen was recalled due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

How is the competition rated?

There has been no mass take-off of swimmers since last year. With the introduction of the new timing system, each swimmer will be individually measured at the start and finish. Since then, each participant has their own individual time.

Swimming is then assessed in five age groups, broken down by male and female. In the I age group, there are people aged from 14 to 25, born in the years 1997-2008. 26-37-year-olds born in 1985-1996 compete in AK II, and continue in AK III (38-49 years, 1973-1984), AK IV (50-59 years, 1963-1972), AK V (from 60 years ). , born 62 years of age and earlier).

How is the 20th children’s swim?

Children aged 10 to 13 swim about 800 meters from the bathing beach to the lake. The 100 starting places for the Kindersundschwimmen are announced. Registration is now possible online, you can also register on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or on Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Registration must be done by a parent or legal guardian.
