It is wonderful that the Prussian path that we “allegedly” traced to our parents to feed our children is finally being questioned.

I recommend taking a look at the children’s food shelves in exquisite France. The offer there is much more colorful. You can find a wide variety of vegetables there, such as artichokes and even green beans. Fish bowls are called there: Lotte et artichauts or cabillaud avec petits pois.

And my daughter thought it was great at the time, especially the fish dishes. That says it all.

The headline suggests that parents in Germany are no longer receiving current recommendations for feeding young children. The reasoning is based on two mistakes.

First, the article does not make a clear distinction between the old manufacturer recommendations, which can still be seen in the tables, and the official recommendations of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) and the Department of Child Nutrition Research (FKE). It is not surprising, however, that there is a lot of uncertainty here, not only among parents, because when looking for these recommendations on the Internet, you will only find brochures that are paid and for which you should also pay shipping costs.

The second paragraph reportedly mentions official recommendations. Here, the knowledgeable reader as well as the first time reader is surprised when he says here, from the fifth month, meat-potato-vegetable porridge. And after much criticism of these supposedly strict guidelines, you’ve finally read what the official recommendations really are, namely: first complementary foods between five and seven months. So adapted to the child’s development, and not according to a set plan.

FKE’s recommendations also include exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and thereafter as a supplement. As mentioned in the article, DGE has no concerns about a vegetarian diet. Vegan diets for young children are advised against, but there are recommendations on what parents should consider if they really want them.

Making your own gruels is also recommended if you are not just looking at the tables. The comment “For a long time it was said that infants should start complementary feeding from the age of five months” seems to follow more closely from the manufacturer’s recommendations, as the current FKE recommendations were already in force in the mid-1980s. The only change, as rightly mentioned in the article, is more variety. When it comes to preventing allergies, people believed that certain foods should be avoided during the first year of life. Changing this recommendation shows that new knowledge is being introduced.

The second mistake is to attribute improper eating behavior and frequent obesity of older children to incorrect supplementary nutritional recommendations for the first year of life. Of course, it is absolutely true that nutrition is crucial in the first year of life, and possibly also in the mother-to-be. And weaning the baby from the breast as an addition to porridge is quite normal for mothers who cook themselves. The child eats at the family table and can also try. And that is also clearly stated in the recommendations of the tenth month. The cited experts also do not reject these recommendations, but supplement them with other aspects.

However, it is overlooked that baby food can only be as good as family food, since the baby eats with them at the latest by the age of two. And if in many families the meal together does not meet the recommendations or is not eaten in a pleasant atmosphere, it is probably better if the child is given a glass instead of fatty fries.

Little is said about a very important aspect of nutritional education that can turn babies into treaters. It’s not just about what you eat, but most of all about how. If your baby is being fed in front of the TV or with a cell phone in hand, the best nutrition will not help. Cooking together and trying out new cooking methods is also part of nutritional education. This is where the criticism should begin. State institutions do not reach out to parents who need support in particular. If official offers are hard to come by and are subject to a fee, it should come as no surprise that they don’t get where they are most needed. The ad then fills this gap and is also targeted at children. There are still no legal restrictions in this regard. So it is not inadequate complementary dietary advice but a lack of knowledge or improper implementation that lead to infants becoming obese children.

The essence of infant nutrition is the gradual introduction of new foods into the diet. Food intolerances cannot be identified faster. Infant feeding is not a disease that should be part of medical school. There are nutritionists who have the necessary skills.
