Formula 1 is going through a completely crazy race at Silverstone. A bad accident is terrifying. Then the hope of winning the world champion Verstappen is breaking. Finally, the winner of the premiere.

Silverstone – In the Formula 1 madness at Silverstone, Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz crowned his 150th Grand Prix with the first victory of his career.

Undeterred by the terrible catastrophe at the start, the Spaniard triumphed on Sunday in the most spectacular race in years, ahead of Mexican Sergio Perez at Red Bull, with Lewis Hamilton in third place for the Mercedes super star, who for a moment could even count on his ninth victory in his home country.

World championship leader Max Verstappen had a setback with a damaged car and only finished seventh. The biggest news of the day for Formula 1, however, was that China’s Guanyu Zhou and Thailand’s Alexander Albon avoided a terrible accident at the start of the race.

First championship points for Mick Schumacher

Haas driver Mick Schumacher, who started the day penultimate to eighth place, managed an amazing race and scored the first four World Championship points of his career. He almost even passed Verstappen in the last few meters. Aston driver Martin Sebastian Vettel scored two points on his 35th birthday after battling his way from 18th to ninth position.

In the overall World Cup ranking, Verstappen continues to lead clearly with 181 points. Red Bull’s teammate Perez is second with 34 points behind. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who was only six points behind at Verstappen on Fourth Silverstone, is third and is now 43 points behind.

A dramatic accident after take-off

142,000 spectators in the stands watched a very dramatic spectacle. Formula 1 held its breath a few seconds after takeoff. Zhou fired his Alpha Romeo blindly off the track, flew over the tire railings, and crashed into the security fence. He miraculously survived this horrific accident without serious injuries. Protecting the Cockpit “Halo”, the titanium headband that was still controversial a few years ago, probably prevented worse things from happening.

The scene was triggered by Pierre Gasly’s rehearsal in Alpha Tauri. The French touched George Russell’s Mercedes, which in turn collided with Zhou’s car. Behind him, the pilots tried to dodge. In doing so, Vettel ran into Williams Albon who spun around and bumped into several cars. Williams was stuck on the side of the track badly damaged.

Like Zhou, Albon was taken to the track hospital. “There was no serious injury,” said the worldwide Fia union. Zhou may have left the medical center during the race. Meanwhile, Albon was transported by helicopter to nearby Coventry Hospital for further “preventive checks”.

Due to accidents, the race was immediately stopped. For this reason, the action of several demonstrators who passed over the fences and stormed the track almost went underground. The police had evidence of such protests before and warned against the threat to the lives of those involved. All activists were safely taken off the track and there have been several arrests, Nottingham County Police said.

After almost an hour, the race could start anew. If Verstappen overtook Sainz on the first start, the Spaniard was aggressively defending his lead this time. Fighting for positions, Verstappen and Leclerc pushed each other away, who then touched Perez’s Red Bull. The Mexican soon had to get a new front wing.

Sainz can take advantage of the safety car phase

An exciting pursuit with new twists and turns. Verstappen took the lead after Sainz made a driving error. Soon, however, the world champion complained of problems and went to the pits for new tires. But things did not get any better for the 24-year-old, who had previously won six races of the season. “The car is 100 percent broken,” said Verstappen, and returned to the garage. Red Bull informed him that his chassis was damaged. The chance to win was gone.

Halfway through the race, Hamilton took the lead for the first time as both Ferraris were fitted with fresh tires. Leclerc was able to overtake his slower teammate Sainz in pursuit of the Mercedes star. On Lap 34, Hamilton came to the tire service, now both Ferraris were in the lead again.

But the show is not over yet. Esteban Ocon had to park his faulty Alpine. The safety car has arrived to save the car and slow down the field. Leclerc kept going, Sainz and Hamilton got fresh rubber rollers again.

This especially paid off for Sainz who was able to overtake Leclerc after the race approval. Hamilton still had to let Perez pass, but he still finished on the podium.
