From July 9 to September 16, 2022, ARD Kulturradio will present the best concerts of the classical and festival summer, cabaret, jazz, readings and in-depth discussions. For ten weeks, broadcasters under the leadership of MDR 70 organize joint “radio festival nights” – always from 8pm to midnight. The entire program is available at www.ardradiofestival.de. The highlights of the festival can then be heard in the ARD audio library.
On July 9, MDR will start this year’s ARD Radio Festival 2022 and announce a varied evening – with classical, romantic and world music. From 20:00 onwards, the MDR Symphony Orchestra can be watched under the direction of Marie Jacquot in the Liebfrauenkirche in Wernigerode, which has been transformed into a concert hall. Moreover, the young French violinist Mohamed Hiber will make his debut at the Summer Music MDR with Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A major KV 219. From 10.00 pm, the inaugural concert of the largest folk roots music festival in Rudolstadt with singer and songwriter Rufus Wainwright will be broadcast live with a time delay.
The ARD Radio Festival offers concert and opera events from the Rheingau Music Festival (including July 14), Bayreuth Festival (from July 25), the Salzburg Festival (live on July 29) and the world’s largest music event “Last Night the Proms” in London (September 10). You can also experience recordings from the Berlin Music Festival, Kissinger Sommer, Leipzig Bach Festival, Bregenz Festival, Classics on Odeonsplatz and many other festivals all over Europe – from France and Spain to Wales and Finland to Lithuania and Estonia.
Jazz singer Afra Kane on July 21, drummer Wolfgang Haffner with his guests (including Max Mutzke, Cassandra Steen, Nightmare On Wax, Nils Landgren) on August 7 and Hamburg singer and songwriter Anne promise a first-class listening experience from the non-classical Depenbusch area during of his home game at the Elbphilharmonie on August 30.
Literature from the African continent
The Radio ARD Festival offers 15 voices from the African continent on stage. You can hear Nobel Prize laureates, Peace Prize winners and other honored, but also authors who need to be rediscovered. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Algeria regaining independence on 5 July 2022, the novel “Fantasia” by the Algerian writer Assi Djebar will be in the spotlight. It tells about the liberation of the country from a female point of view and analyzes the painful history of Algeria. The next hearts of the program are the novels “The Thief and the Dogs” by the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner Nagib Machfus and “Aké. Years of childhood ”by the Nigerian Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.

Cabaret and talks
The Radio ARD Festival offers an hour of cabaret on four Saturdays from 23:00: you will be able to hear the opening gala of this year’s European Oscars “Salzburger Stier” on July 16, as well as broadcasts of the award winners: Luise Kinseher from Germany on July 30, Omar Sarsam from Austria on August 6, and Fatima Moumouni and Laurin Buser from Switzerland on August 27.
