DHL eCommerce Solutions invests EUR 560 million in UK e-commerce business

The coronation pandemic not only accelerated digitization, but also significantly changed consumer behavior: the growth of online commerce has accelerated significantly and shopping habits have changed. At Deutsche Post DHL Group, we are convinced that the online shopping trend will continue. E-commerce is one of the cornerstones of our 2025 strategy and we will continue to invest in this sector. An important role in this is played by the investment in Great Britain, which supports the expansion and modernization of our European network. I look forward to supporting the company on its growth path in my new role as CEO of DHL eCommerce Solutions from August 1, ”said Pablo Ciano, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development, Deutsche Post DHL Group and appointed CEO of DHL eCommerce Solutions.

Almost half of the investment will be allocated to the new 25,000 m² hub at SEGRO Park Coventry Gateway, south of Coventry Airport. The new facility will be able to handle over 500,000 shipments per day. Over 600 jobs are expected to be created for their operation, for example for warehouse specialists and drivers, as well as in administration and management. The new hub will offer secure bonded warehouses and customs clearance capabilities to support international e-commerce, a 48th transshipment terminal for transhipment docks, and state-of-the-art, high-speed sorting equipment to automatically sort shipments of various sizes and weights. The building was designed in accordance with the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard. To reduce CO2occupied space is used by, among others photovoltaic modules with a total area of 7,000 m2, LED lighting and green areas protecting the biodiversity around the facility. In addition to charging stations for electric cars, there will also be charging stations for electric vans and a gas station infrastructure for sustainable fuels on site to anticipate technological developments in larger vehicles in the coming years.

In addition, as a first step, EUR 75 million will be invested in modernizing the company’s fleet, with an emphasis on alternative fuel vehicles. The fleet investment includes six all-electric 18-ton trucks, 30 liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) trucks and 18 electric tractors. Further investments in a more sustainable fleet will follow.

Investments in sustainable infrastructure and vehicles support the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s sustainability strategy, which is based on the specifications of the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and therefore in line with the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. In total, the Deutsche Post DHL Group will spend seven billion euros on sustainable fuels and clean technologies by 2030.

In addition, DHL eCommerce Solutions will invest over EUR 220 million in the development of ten brand new UK pick-up and delivery points and in the expansion of 20 existing locations. New and expanded warehouses will create another 3,500 jobs in Great Britain. The locations have been strategically selected to be closer to customers, expand the electric fleet and shorten transit times.

Peter Fuller, CEO of DHL Parcel UK: “This investment reflects the outstanding work of our employees and partners over the past two years. Thanks to their commitment, we have achieved a level of growth that requires a huge expansion of our capabilities to keep up with customer demand. E-commerce will continue to shape the world around us. With this investment, the strong DHL brand and our pioneering approach to digitization and sustainability, we will be in an excellent position to benefit from market growth. ”
