Bad Honnef. E-commerce, fixed retail and sustainable urban logistics are not mutually exclusive. The Bad Honnef department store has proven this since its opening in November 2018. The city of Bad Honnef has learned from the experience of the last few years and together with strategic partners – the retail association Bonn Rhein-Sieg-Euskirchen, IHK Bonn / Rhein-Sieg and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics in Dortmund – have planned the further expansion of Kiez in Rhein department store. This is where Bad Honnef starts.
The Kiez department store closed on June 30 to allow for the digital relocation of goods and stores to the Rhein department store. The virtual opening is scheduled for July 11. Technically and organisationally, the Rhein-Kaufhaus provides the basis for more flexible adaptations and development outside the city limits: The Rhein-Kaufhaus aims to strengthen all local and regional retail on the Rhine and Sieg. It is a declared common goal of strategic partners, the Bonn Rhein-Sieg Euskirchen Retail Association, the Bonn / Rhein-Sieg Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Institute of Material Flow and Logistics. Fraunhofer.
It is no coincidence that the new Rhein department store has been launched in Bad Honnef: Since the founding of a department store in the Bad Honnef district, fresh groceries, fashion and jewelry have been offered at a virtual department store in the city and delivered by stationary retailers. the method of providing the delivery service by means of a cargo bicycle transported to the customer. A concept that strengthens local retail, gives stores with little digital affinity access to e-commerce, and inspires people from all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Bad Honnef, people and the media heard about the success of the neighborhood department store. Therefore, many of the Kiez department store components will also be adapted at the Rhein department store, meaning that at first glance little will change for stores and customers. What’s new is that stores can be maintained more easily, new delivery and payment options can be selected and the chat feature can be used to obtain information.
“It is important for us that the inner cities remain important centers. So we set up the Kiez department store as part of our location marketing, and it looks like we’ve done a pioneering job. Another effect is that the brick-and-mortar retailer has a digital sales channel that brings it closer to customers who are increasingly familiar with digital technology, says Mayor Otto Neuhoff: with customers not only in Bad Honnef, but preferably also in many cities of the region in their centers. We think that’s great. “
Thanks to the Rhein-Kaufhaus, not only the city of Bad Honnef but the entire region will have a platform with an attractive digital sales channel from the shop to the front door, emphasizes Jannis Vassiliou, Managing Director of Bonn Rhein-Sieg Euskirchen Retail. Association: “There is no question that digitization is one of the most pressing problems in retail and has been a dominant topic for a retail association for some time. A hybrid setup of a stationary retail, i.e. a combination of a stationary and online business, is inevitable and necessary for the future of every retailer. This is where the Rhein department store comes in. It is not only a useful tool for digitizing retailers, it is also the starting signal for the digitization of the entire retail trade in the Bonn region, Rhein-Sieg district and Euskirchen. We are ready to support dealers in an advisory capacity and always with great commitment ”.
Till Bornstedt, trade contact at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Bonn / Rhein-Sieg, also highlights the potential and opportunities for retailers in the region: “What stands out is the scalability of the Rhein department store, which comes from region to region, including thus they can be used by as many shops and a large clientele as possible. It also gives dealers whose municipality does not have a comparable portal or who have not yet had any experience in online trading, access to digital sales channels. Trade tax and profits remain in the region and customers and dealers can also contact in person due to physical proximity. You know where the goods come from and you can also visit the store. “
The proximity to the space, the possibility of personal contact with the shop and deliverers as well as transport by cargo bicycle are the features that make up the special charm of the Rhein department store, explains Dr. Christoph Vornholt, Senior Scientist at the Institute of Material Flow and Logistics Fraunhofer (IML) in Dortmund: “The logistics issue is of key importance in retail. There are clean logisticians who deliver goods from the central warehouse to the front door. And then there’s retail. The Rhein-Kaufhaus goes its own way with delivery with an eco-friendly cargo bike and personal service from a trusted driver from the stationary shop to the front door. ”
This fast delivery from the specialist shop directly to the customer is a decisive advantage of the location in Bad Honnef, says Elfi Thudt, owner of the specialist sea delicatessen shop in the city center: “From the very beginning of my business, I wanted to be able to offer fast deliveries. My specialty shop is too small for my own delivery service and a taxi delivery would be unfeasible from a cost and cold chain point of view. The Kiez department store and the future Rhein department store are just right for my business. Because it offers not only logistics, but also our digital storefront, which can be viewed 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. “
