The appointment of the Augsburg Higher Vocational School as a technical university as part of the “50 years of the Augsburg Vocational School” was a surprise and was – so to speak – a gift from the prime minister for the 50th anniversary celebration. “Happy birthday, dear Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, on your 50th birthday! A well-deserved gift from the state government is promotion to a polytechnic university, the first in Swabia. The strength of the university is the proximity to the practice and strong roots in the region. Augsburg is an important science and research location, including with the AI ​​network. Our future lies in research, science and technology, said the Prime Minister.

The title of Technical University pays tribute to the development of the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences. In recent years, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences has also developed in technical areas and has placed a strong emphasis on applied research in the fields of manufacturing and automation, artificial intelligence, IT security and big data. With the courses “International Information Systems”, “Business Psychology”, “Digital Master Builder”, “Data Science” and “Creative Engineering”, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences recently designed five courses dedicated to the current challenges in these technical driving topics.

Over 300 guests attended the ceremony at the Golden Hall of the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg, including Markus Blume, Minister of State for Science and Art, Mayor of Augsburg Eva Weber, Ramona Meinzer, President of the University Council and Board, Partner Aumüller Aumatic GmbH and Klaus Weinmann, founder of Cancom SE / CEO Primepulse SE.

State Minister Markus Blume said in his welcoming speech: “Augsburg University of Applied Sciences has a rapidly growing student population and has achieved great success in teaching, research and transfer. On August 1, 1971, Rudolf Diesel Polytechnic and the city’s art school merged to form the Augsburg State University of Applied Sciences. Due to the pandemic, the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg was unable to celebrate its anniversary last year, which has now been made up for in a grand ceremony.

In 1971, about 1,000 students enrolled at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences at the time, majoring in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Design, Mechanical Engineering and at the Faculty of Science and Technology. Over the years, economics (1973) and computer science (1980) supplemented the offer of studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg. As the latest addition to the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences portfolio, the Social Affairs area was added in 2019 with a Social Work degree.

Augsburg Mayor Eva Weber explained in her welcome speech: “Augsburg’s business location benefits greatly from the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences.” Collaboration between business, science and society throughout the Swabian region of Bavaria is one of the university’s core competences.

About 6,700 students currently attend Augsburg University of Applied Sciences and are trained to become the sought-after personalities of business and society in over 50 courses and further education offerings – as promised by the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences brand. About 1,500 graduates leave the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences each year. Most of them find work in the region here, as Ramona Meinzer, President of the University Council and Managing Partner of Aumüller Aumatic emphasized during the ceremony: “Today we cannot afford to lose even one person who urgently needs a qualified employee”. That is why communication between the university and the company is so important.

Augsburg University of Applied Sciences is a key source of inspiration for the region: with the research priorities ‘Resource Efficiency’ and ‘Digitization in Manufacturing and Service’ and with two technology transfer centers in Nördlingen and Donauwörth, it is the first point of contact for applied research for companies in region. With the participation of the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences in the production network, AI transforms basic research in artificial intelligence into application solutions for the regional industry.

During his speech, Minister of State Blume especially emphasized the idea of ​​transfer to Augsburg University of Applied Sciences – that is, transfer of scientific thought into practice: “We must make the soil fertile for the best ideas. Not only for the best academic ideas, but also for the best ideas that can really mature in practice – I would mention the keywords: foundations and start-ups. “

With HSA_funkenwerk, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences created a founding forge for the region. Funkenwerk is one of Bavaria’s top addresses when it comes to support for start-ups. According to the 2020 Stifterverband launch radar, Augsburg University of Applied Sciences currently ranks third among the universities of applied science in Bavaria.
