This Lord of the Rings-Game gollum is one of several Daedalic innovations that the Daedalic Entertainment team is looking to use to score points at Gamescom 2022.
Carsten Fichtelmann has always been a friend of honest words – and of course remains so after € 53 million bid for Daedalic Entertainment: French publisher Nacon took over the game developer in February 2022. This literally opens up completely different possibilities for the Hamburg-based company that started out as an adventure in 2007 but is now established in all popular genres.
This year, Gamescom obviously focuses on the adventure of action Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which will launch on September 1 – just a few days after Gamescom. In an interview, Fichtelmann reveals what else Daedalic is planning for the fair in Cologne from 24 to 28 August.
GamesWirtschaft: Daedalic Entertainment will attend Gamescom 2022 – for the first time as part of the Nacon Group. What are your expectations of Cologne?
Fichtelmann: It will be a reboot for the entire industry after a long hiatus. It would be all the more important to be able to welcome all the important players on site. Gamescom should not lose its appeal. After the cancellations, I would wish the India Arena area was simply doubled. Many outstanding games were shown in a very small space.
At the last physical Gamescom 2019, Daedalic’s innovations were spread over several stations. Where will you find Daedalic in the exhibition halls this time?
It will be just like last time. There are also partnerships Lord of the Rings: Gollum and in India Arena Booth, many innovations will be shown: The Inkulinati, which stands out for its artistic style, will be more like a point-and-click adventure The kids of Silentown show, and also very popular nowadays potions tycoon.
Incidentally, all three are the titles selected by the jury, which once again confirms the high quality of our portfolio. In addition, we show up in a specially prepared cooperation zone on the couch Wild forests, No handrail! and Drop to the finish line and will provide a lot of fun for many players in the independent zone.
Your most important product – Lord of the Rings: Gollum – it appears only a few days after the fair. What are your plans for Gamescom?
It is about mobilizing and informing the last ignorant. We still have a lot of work to do before the premiere, not only on the game itself, but also on the accompanying marketing.
How would you rate the importance of Gamescom in 2022 a) to end users and b) industry visitors?
Two things should be mentioned here.
First: The higher ticket prices are definitely worth visiting. It doesn’t matter that some of the big publishers aren’t there. Too bad the public image, but as a guest you can still try hundreds of games. German fairs often lack the mentality and willingness to engage in new games and ideas and to try something new.
Secondly: We show the press our upcoming news and meet our sales partners. In addition, we encourage developers interested in publishing cooperation to visit us. In this area, our capabilities have grown significantly thanks to the Nacon Group. We can also offer larger investments and have a retail solution on offer, as long as this still plays a role for the potential title.
Already this year, Gamescom will transform from a gaming station fair into a game festival. How do you rate this decision?
It is important that the games are in the foreground, i.e. the most important thing is that there are more game stations. Gamescom was already a gaming festival, but not like PAX, for example. But this is more due to the visitors and less to the exhibitors’ will.
The whole Coachella comparison met with a big wind in the face. As a gamer, developer, publisher or former GAME board member, I don’t feel disheartened. And I honestly don’t understand what this nonsense is all about. But it can’t be because of my advanced age either, because neither my colleagues in my middle age nor my little children can do anything about it.
From an exhibitor’s point of view: How important are physical fairs such as PAX or Gamescom to you from a marketing point of view – also compared to your own formats such as Nacon Connect?
PAX has been our key event since 2016. We do all other fairs – such as Gamescom – half-strength or because it must be so. We have been building large stands at PAX for years and we are starting again in 2023.
In addition, the Daedalic Days – comparable to Nacon Connect – are our highlight of the event that draws attention to our innovations. I think Daedalic Days will remain digital in the future.
So both are important.
