Advanced fun with small obstacles – 3,100 kilometers in an endurance test

Here is now, snow-white and majestic, a kind of monolith, with an external appearance, about which a lot has been written. The kidneys, which some considered disproportionately large, have already been criticized enough – day by day we liked them better and better, because as a design element they blend in with the undisturbed front end with narrow headlights. If, despite the dimensions, the bodywork is still quite understated, the BMW kidney grille is a discreet indication that it is better not to mess with this car.

peace and joy

As with the first driving experience in the iX M60’s sports car, you can instantly relax and have fun when seated in the driver’s seat, which could be considered a seat in the saloon – although the best of all passengers. In relation to her bruised back, she complained that the massage functions of the chair could be improved. However, they both find it quite annoying that various seat comfort functions, such as cooling, have to be set in the center display, which the driver perceives while driving as very annoying manipulation by the front passenger.

Subjective perception of disturbances caused by the comfort settings of the front passenger seat – this is a high-level clinging if you want to describe failures of the BMW iX xDrive 50. Hence, once again criticism from the front passenger: not enough space for a purse and a drink holder is placed far too low …

Too big, too big? The BMW iX xDrive 50 kidneys (here in Berlin) evoke different reactions. We found it to fit perfectly with the design of the car.

In addition to such logistical details, driving the BMW iX xDrive 50 is pure pleasure. Anyone who doesn’t confuse sovereignty and top speed performance – the iX50 is limited to 200 km / h – will be completely amazed by the 765 Nm at 385 kW / 523 hp in all driving situations. The numbers only mean that this car has enough power reserves for every imaginable driving situation.

A lesson on motorway chasers

Be it overtaking truck convoys on the Saxon bypass routes on the way to Vienna, or is it a little educational lesson on how to deal with motorway speeders who, with their tuned radiator grills, like to appear at the rear of the iX 50, which is quietly following a cruise with cruise control – once in a motion When you step on the gas pedal, even the 911 in the rearview mirror shrinks to miniatures in record time. If you then select sport mode, you should inform passengers in advance. The acceleration values throw you into your seats so mercilessly that not for everyone.

The magic of instantly releasing energy in electric vehicles is always inspiring – and if you don’t want to be permanently connected to the charging station – it also leads to a more balanced and confident driving behavior. Of course, the huge 111.5 kWh battery also discharges – and in our case this happened with a mix of around 2,500 kilometers of highways and 600 kilometers of urban / rural roads with a range of around 440 kilometers.

This is significantly less than the range of 549 to 630 kilometers specified by the factory, and with an average consumption of 26.3 kWh per 100 kilometers, it is significantly higher than the BMW values of 21.4 to 19.8 kWh. If you divide the total kilometers traveled by the total consumption of 200.4 kWh, you get a consumption of 15.47 kWh. This is the enigmatic arithmetic of e-mobility …

Vehicle conclusion from a good two-week test …

In the BMW iX xDrive 50 and the Achilles heel load, the load on the Achilles heel is essentially constant. Reliably calculates suitable charging stops at fast charging stations on motorways and on long journeys. The specified time windows for fast charging with 195 kW were kept until the second. Downtown wasn’t that pleasant. Before starting the long journey back from Vienna to Hamburg, the system sent us to a production facility on the main road which was firstly only accessible with a personalized access authorization and secondly was closed on Sunday. Then a weaker charging station in McDonalds in the immediate vicinity had to help with a range of several dozen kilometers and a new stopover had to be calculated. Such software problems are a nuisance in a vehicle that costs 129,000 euros.

The communicative avatar mumbles happily and aimlessly in between

Which brings us to the hurdles that the BMW software has set for us this time. This applies to the virtual assistant. Anyone who, like us, makes the mistake of assigning a friendly voice their own identifying word – in our case, friendly Hey – will henceforth be full of texts in the most absurd situations. The communicative avatar babbles happily and aimlessly between them. What initially sparked the fun turns into a really annoying detail over the long haul. The only thing that helps is turning it off.

More important were the problems with the navigation, which, incidentally, appeared after the OTA update. If the system detects a narrowing of the lane, it displays it for a period of several dozen kilometers, even if it is long past. But what can become really dangerous if you draw the opposite conclusion from our experience is the following: in Vienna, navigation has in some cases already become independent, which has led to absurd circles around a given target. Just before the end of the tour, about 30 kilometers before the Hamburger Autobahnkreuz Südwest, the navigation system wanted to take us home on Monday morning at 0.30 am across the Elbe bridges through the city center.

When the GPS declares roads impassable

A check on the road radio and the Apple Maps app did not show that BMW could be right. So we turned towards the tunnel over the Elbe, which was confirmed by repeated requests to turn 20 kilometers and ended several hundred meters before entering the tunnel in the false claim that the road was impassable shown below. We got home safely and, above all, faster than the all-knowing car had planned for us.

However, the opposite conclusion is somewhat of concern. What if the BMW iX xDrive 50 suddenly decided to steer us onto a truly impassable road? But fortunately, there is an OTA, which is the ability to send new data and software kits to the car “wirelessly”. In this case, it would be really advisable.

Unexplainable mistake: The iX 50 absolutely wanted to prevent you from traveling home through the Elbe Tunnel, claiming that the A7 is impassable as a road.

Besides, driving the iX 50 is pure pleasure. Smooth running, the silence and the driving culture provide for truly relaxing moments, the nighttime charging is best experienced in an air-conditioned environment with a nap, and the comfortable seats are fun everywhere in the vehicle, provided you are not too fit on the road, as side support is a bit lacking. Otherwise, the big BMW is a vehicle that really lends itself to everyday use – especially when you consider that most supermarkets now have charging points and no parking problems. The e-SUV also has no problems loading the weekly store.

Application: Pure luxury and passion, combined with understatement and suitability for everyday use, the BMW iX xDrive 50 is a truly unique type of car – and hopefully with the next update it will be as flawless as you would expect from a vehicle in its category.
