Shell leases the “The Yard” office building in Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier for its German headquarters | News

Shell is moving towards zero net emissions

As part of its Powering Progress strategy, Shell has set a global goal of becoming a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050 at the latest. Above all, it means delivering cleaner energy solutions and decarbonising our own business. The conscious decision made by The Yard in Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier to shape the urban space of tomorrow and set new standards for sustainable development is another sign of Shell’s progress in this demanding field of operation.

Certified sustainability at Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier

All new buildings in Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier are “BREEAM” certified in the categories “Communities” and “New Construction Excellent”. The entire construction site was also the first major project in Germany to receive DGNB precertification for sustainable construction sites, which is already being used successfully as a planning and management tool and obliges the development of a multi-functional project to achieve the highest possible sustainability quality before completion. In addition, Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield attaches great importance to a low carbon footprint and a high recycling rate when choosing building materials. For example, low-carbon cement is used in the building’s structure, which saves up to 50 percent of CO2 consumption compared to conventional cement. In addition, only wood from legally verifiable sources is used, and recycled steel is used as concrete reinforcement. Electricity from 100% renewable energy sources during construction and later operation, perfectly insulated building shell with rooms flooded with daylight, optimal connections with local public transport, a total of 3,500 parking spaces for bicycles and charging stations for e-bikes and e-cars, modern sharing and shuttle offers in the district – the sustainable overall concept of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier and its office buildings includes numerous components and measures.

The Yard: an inspiring environment for the future world of work

As a modern interpretation of Hamburg’s historic red brick office buildings, The Yard combines today’s demands for an innovative working environment with Hamburg’s history. The building was designed by Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei (LRO), which is considered to be one of the most respected architectural offices in Germany. A special highlight: the large areas of approximately 3,600 m² per floor are arranged around three spacious internal gardens with a total area of 1,000 m², which can also be accessed from the upper floor via connecting stairs and can therefore be used for replacement or break. Interaction inside and out fosters communication and creativity in the building. Inspirational, community-oriented workplaces with open structures that bring people together and enable new synergies are created. The Yard is perfectly integrated into the lively center of the district, just a few steps from the metro station and directly connected to the underground car park by a lift in the foyer.

Jens Müller-Belau, Managing Director Energy Transition at Shell, Germany, says: “The energy transition is driving us and it is an opportunity to completely change our position. Moving to a new, ultra-modern building in the heart of the city, which is state-of-the-art in terms of energy and other aspects, also marks the beginning of a new era of community and sustainability for our employees. ”

Andreas Hohlmann, Managing Director Austria and Germany at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, says: “We are very pleased that Shell has chosen The Yard as its new German headquarters. This proves that thanks to the open, flexible structures of our office space and a sustainable, modern structure in Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, we optimally respond to the current needs of companies and their employees. In times of changing working methods and office culture, company workplaces need to inspire, identify, encourage cooperation and create a homely atmosphere more than ever – all in the context of high standards of sustainable development. With The Yard, we fulfill these requirements in an exemplary manner. The perfect location on the Elbe, optimal integration with the local infrastructure, including its own metro station in the district, and the proximity of catering, shopping and leisure facilities further increase the attractiveness. ”
