Enve Melee 2023: The new all-round racing bike

With Enve Melee 2023, the American wheel specialists present a consistent racing bike, which, however, is particularly versatile. With tire clearance up to 35 mm and optimized aerodynamics, the Melee is pointing the way to the future of performance racing bikes? We were able to personally take a look at the Eurobike off the beaten track bike.

Enve Melee 2022 info and prices

Enve Custom Road only marked the entry of American carbon specialists to build complete racing bikes. It is manufactured exclusively at the customer’s request at the Ogden, Utah facility and has the characteristics of an endurance racing motorcycle. Now Americans are expanding their racing bike line-up with a racing bike that’s 100% speed-driven and also mass-produced in Asia: the Enve Melee. Despite the Speed Trim version, it promises some performance in all road conditions with tire clearance up to 35 mm. And when it comes to geometry, Enve also takes a more complex approach. Key data:

  • A versatile racing bike
  • Tire clearance from 25mm to 35mm in 700c
  • Aero optimized frame shape
  • We place particular emphasis on the fit and geometry – 5 bends of the fork
  • 7 frame sizes 47, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60
  • weight frame 850g *

What’s new?

The Enve Melee is the first mass-produced racing bike from American carbon specialists. While the Enve Custom Road remains on the agenda and is being built pipe-to-pipe at the customer’s request in Ogden, Utah, the new Enve Melee will be manufactured in shell construction at the Enve plant in Asia for larger volumes. Unlike the custom road, it is also only available in the color shown here. “The Melee has a shell design which has allowed us to refine the shapes of the pipes, reduce weight and increase the overall performance of Melee,” explains Jake Pantone of Enve.

Aero optimized for Enve wheels

Improved aerodynamics was a priority during the development of the Enve Melee. At the Eurobike 2022 presentation, the aerodynamic advantage over the Enve Custom Road was estimated at an average of 6 watts savings at 48 km / h and a 0 to 15 degree angle of attack. At 32 km / h, it should still be 2 watts – measured on Enve SES 6.7 wheels.

According to Enve, the shapes of the Melee tubes are optimized to be combined with their own rim profiles.

A large part of the aerodynamic savings should also go to the new cockpit with internal cables and cables.

However, according to Enve, aero performance should not come at the expense of the other important features of a racing bike, which Enve counts especially on proper fit, multi-trail performance and weight. In aero development, Enve has some knowledge of its own aerodynamic wheels and has optimized the hand-to-hand combat accordingly. The frame has all the features of aerodynamic performance: minimal frontal area, Kamm Tail tube shapes and full frontal integration. Enve wants to design the shapes of the Melee tubes to perfectly complement their own SES rim profiles.

Versatility – for tires up to 35mm

In terms of tire clearance, however, the Enve Melee is on a par with the all-road bike. Tires up to 35mm on the 700c should fit the frame and fork. It outperforms most aero road bikes as well as your typical racing road bike. However, the geometry should work best with tires between 27mm and 31mm wide. Odd numbers? Enve produces its own line of tires which is designed for the company’s rims and also has unconventional sizes.

Equipment: as undercarriage only

Enve Melee is only available as a chassis. The customization kit then includes a frame, an Enve fork, an Enve cockpit for internal cable routing including a separate stem, as well as a headset and a carbon seatpost (in proprietary size, of course). More details of the frame:

  • bottom bracket design T47
  • control tube 1.5 up and 1.125 ″ down
  • brake mount flat handle
  • compatibility 1x / 2x (Shimano only), mechanical and electronic gears, not compatible with Campagnolo EPS
  • Guarantee 5 years (2 years for a color)

The new Enve stem, available in lengths from 80mm to 130mm, celebrates its premiere with a melee weapon. It is designed for internal cable and line routing. A special plug removes the screws from the air flow. The new “integrated road stem” is said to weigh 175 grams and is 110 grams long. The Melee carbon seatpost is said to weigh 188 grams in the middle of the 3 available lengths.

Geometry: compact and true to size

When it comes to Enve Melee geometry, Enve pays particular attention to proper fit and similar handling characteristics for riders of all sizes. The range of frame sizes isn’t huge with 7 different framesets, but it’s still a little better than usual.

As Enve laid the foundations for its success by building its own carbon forks for custom suppliers, the highlight of the geometry is the customization of 5 (!) Fork pre-bends appropriate to the size. This is to achieve a similar feel on the handlebars of a melee weapon in all frame sizes. In fact, the trail is relatively close together, measuring 58mm in the smallest frame size as well as the largest – all with 27mm tires (Enve is kind enough to provide a trail for different tire sizes!). Keyword tire size: according to Enve, the geometry is optimized for tires from 27mm to 32mm.

For identical cornering handling, the geometry is designed for forks with 5 different pre-folds.
# For identical cornering handling, the geometry is designed for forks with 5 different pre-folds.

According to the paper form, the sitting position should be typical for a racing bike, but more comfortable. The stack-to-reach value of 1.44 in the average frame height is about the same as the Canyon Ultimate CF SL – the latter in size M is generally slightly smaller (shorter reach and stack) than the Melee in size 56 with the Specialized Tarmac SL7 . Hand-to-hand combat is a bit less aggressive deep. The saddle and handlebars angles are very similar on these racing bikes. You can compare other Enve Melee road bikes in our geometry tool.
