On the way to climate neutrality: Géza Solar becomes Head of Climate Protection at HKA, Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, press release

To further strengthen climate protection at the universities of Baden-Württemberg, climate managers are employed at nine locations across the state. They should provide an interface to state building administration for all universities in Baden-Württemberg.

“Universities and research institutions can and should play a pioneering role in climate protection and bring all their innovative strength so that we can achieve our goal of a greenhouse gas neutral government by 2030,” said Science Minister Theresia Bauer. And the Minister of Finance, dr. Danyal Bayaz adds: “We can be active climate defenders with our state-owned buildings. Close cooperation between building authorities and universities is crucial in this regard. Innovative research on innovative buildings that suit you. “

At the beginning of July 2022, Géza Solar, who manages HKA, as well as the Pedagogical University, the University of Music, the University of Design, the State Academy of Fine Arts and the Cooperative State University of Baden-Württemberg, became head of climate protection at the University of Applied Sciences in Karlsruhe (HKA) in Karlsruhe, working closely with the Karlsruhe Property and Building Authority in the development of their energy and climate concepts. Performing this function, it is part of a nationwide network that jointly develops climate protection concepts at universities, initiates implementation processes with other state institutions, and determines progress monitoring. It works in the energy circles of universities to be supervised, supports them conceptually and technically. In particular, in the case of construction and technical measures in buildings, it creates contact with the owner of the building and jointly develops a catalog of measures for a specific place and supports individual universities in the implementation of climate protection projects.

Géza Solar has a Master’s Degree in Geoecology from KIT. Then, as the municipal climate protection manager, he was responsible for the implementation of climate protection measures in the “RegioENERGIE” project. This amalgamation of ten municipalities south of Karlsruhe was awarded, inter alia, as a “best practice example” by the state energy agency KEA-BW. From there, he moved to HKA and as head of climate protection will ensure that participating universities in Karlsruhe become climate neutral by 2030.

“First of all, it is important for me to learn about the different climatic conditions at universities and understand what has already happened locally in terms of climate protection and energy efficiency – that is, to analyze and evaluate the current situation,” says Géza Solar about her work in the first weeks. “Based on this data, we will assess the existing potential in order to develop and implement effective and sustainable measures that will allow you to quickly achieve savings, avoid or reduce emissions and check their transferability to other areas of the university’s activities” – emphasizes prof. dr hab. . Robert Pawłowski, vice-rector for development, construction and infrastructure at HKA. “We at HKA are delighted to be able to contribute to the state government’s climate goals.”

The newly created position of climate protection manager also strengthens HKA’s hitherto activities for climate protection. In 2019, HKA developed the overall concept of the university as part of the “Emission-Free Campus Ideas Competition” announced by the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of Baden-Württemberg, it succeeded in developing a strategy for avoiding and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This concept is an essential part of the 2030 + / Climate Positive Campus Master Plan. As Sustainable Development and Energy Manager, Selma Janssen has been supporting this complex development process for a year and is involved in the climate pact between the universities in Karlsruhe and the city of Karlsruhe. Currently introduces Géza Solar to climate protection at HKA. They are both a strong team for climate protection.
