Haan: Outdoor recreation is great fun for kids

Summer vacation in Haan
Recreation in the outskirts is great fun for children

A total of 150 children participate in recreation in the suburbs. Tours are on the agenda every day. A youth center is also open.

The first half of recreation in the suburbs is over, and the second half has already begun. During the first three weeks, 75 children participating in the program took part in various excursions every day: from the swimming pool to the indoor playground to the amusement park. Children and teenagers participating from July 18 to August 5 can expect something similar.

Every year, the city of Haan offers so-called recreation in the suburbs to children and young people from 6 to 16 years of age. The participants are divided into three groups depending on their age. “Demand is very high every year. We were fully occupied right away, “reports youth officer Peter Burek. While in the years before the Crown it was possible to look after 100 children, this year there are 75 children. The tours are organized by around 20 chaperones and helpers, and preparations begin six months in advance. “Some of our caretakers, some of whom were participants themselves, even go on vacation to rest on the outskirts of the city – only to be there again,” says Burek. Child and youth care takes place every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Special highlights this year are trips to amusement parks such as the Kernwasser Wonderland Kalkar and the Movie World in Bottrop-Kirchhellen. But despite being organized, the suburban recreation team also needs to be flexible and sometimes responsive to the weather. For example, on the exceptionally hot days of the past week, excursions to air-conditioned places such as the “Okidoki” children’s area, the indoor swimming pool or the trampoline took place with different age groups.

“You have to organize and plan a lot. Our team starts daily at 8:15 am and covers the day. Even after the support, we sit down again and discuss what went right and what went wrong – reports Burek. “But I am always the point of contact for parents. You can contact me at any time. “

In addition to relaxing on the outskirts of the city, the Haan Youth Center on Alleestraße will also offer an open meeting place during the holidays for the first time since the second half of the holiday season. It is addressed to young people from 14 years of age every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Thanks to the new “Summer Special 2022” the team will organize and spend the evening hours at a youth center with a rich program with all interested parties.

There was also a youth exchange with the French partner city of Eu. Haan Tran’s family of guardians and Stephen Mangeon from France looked after a total of 10 participants (5 guests from Europe) from 10 to 18 July. Planning the program focused on combining leisure and culture. “All participants had a great time. I would like to thank the host families and the team of supervisors who were very involved in the organization and running of the event. The implementation of these activities would not be possible without the help of host families – says Peter Burek. The program includes visit to Düsseldorf, gas meter in Oberhausen and a trip to Phantasialand. The translators Cornelius Tonn and Pia Bernard actively supported this measure with their linguistic skills during the preparation. “I am very happy that we were able to implement a youth exchange during the pandemic, despite the small group. I am sure that a larger group will take part in the youth exchange in Europe next year – says Burek.
