Viktor Röthlin shows off his favorite training spots on Melchsee-Frutt

This is the premium paid by the Sportbahnen Melchsee-Frutt

Melchsee-Frutt has known Viktor Röthlin (47) since childhood. The former European marathon champion was finally born in Kerns OW, where the road turns towards Melchtal. He currently lives with his family in the neighboring municipality of Ennetmoos NW.

«I used to come to Frutt with my parents. This is where I went on my first hikes with them and climbed there for the first time – he says. And so it is with their two children: Ben (8) and Luna (10) and his wife Renate exploring the mountainous region of his homeland. Viktor Röthlin knows this area inside and out. And that’s why he soon runs not only on Melchsee-Frutt, but also for her. But more on that later.

Melchsee-Frutt is an ideal excursion destination for families, but also offers ambitious nature lovers ambitious and long excursions. The starting point for all activities is the gondola lift to Melchsee-Frutt.

This is also where the start of Viktor Röthlin’s three runs, which the former top athlete initiated a year ago with the Melchsee-Frutt sports railway for running enthusiasts. Like the ski slopes, they are divided into blue, red and black marked slopes – so there is a separate slope for each level. All three run along the Melchsee. Where fishermen meet and where parents play and organize picnics with their children. To motivate the little ones to exercise, Fruttli helps with Fruttliweg. Children get to know the lake in a fun way. Finally, they can claim the medal – just like Viktor Röthlin when he was active.

Aim high

A highlight for every trail runner on Melchsee-Frutt: the view from Hochstollen. “I’ve been to the top so many times, but ‘dschuderet’ every time I go up here. The 360-degree view is just fantastic, ”says Viktor Röthlin. Overlooking the village of Melchsee-Frutt from Melchsee, but also the other lakes of the plateau: Blausee, Tannensee and Engstlensee. There are countless mountain peaks to be admired, from the nearby Titlis and the nearby Pilatus to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. “An unbelievable sight that never ceases to amaze me,” says Viktor Röthlin.

Melchsee-Frutt: excursion destination for families

Melchsee-Frutt is located in the heart of Switzerland and can be reached quickly from Lucerne, Zurich and Basel. Frutt, as the locals call it, is a popular holiday destination both in summer and winter for families, but also for athletes. At almost 2,000 meters above sea level, there is some snow in the canton of Obwalden. The high plateau of Melchsee and Tannensee is surrounded by impressive karst mountain ranges. Melchsee-Frutt can be reached from the valley of the town of Stöckalp by gondola in summer and winter. Access by public transport and car is via Sarnen and Kerns.

But climbing the Hochstollen is tough: “Eight years ago, at the end of my running career, I was able to run all the way to the top,” says Röthlin. Today he too has to adjust to the walking pace from time to time. The route is marked in black, so it is demanding and suitable only for very capable and confident runners. It is 24 kilometers long and goes up to 2,431 meters above sea level. Röthlin also used Melchsee-Frutt for altitude training during his career. If you want to make a circular route via Planplatten to Hochstollen and via Abgschütz back to Melchsee-Frutt at your normal hiking pace, you need to estimate the hiking time to be just over six hours. And add breaks.

leave the path

Melchsee-Frutt is known in Central Switzerland for family excursions away from the hustle and bustle of famous tourist areas – in winter for skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing, in summer for hiking and relaxing. Only the insiders knew that it is perfect for the fashionable sport of cross-country running. This was changed by Viktor Röthlin with the Melchsee-Frutt sports railway a year ago, when they jointly planned and opened three marked routes. “In my experience, cyclocross runners often don’t know where to run in the mountains,” he says. “Thanks to the three footprints, I’ll give you an idea.”

Röthlin, however, advises athletes to deviate from the marked paths from time to time and find their own routes. “This makes racing in the open air, and therefore also in the mountains, exciting,” he says. Or maybe the feet will be wet, because there is no bridge over the stream. But it’s no big deal: trail running shoes dry quickly.

The duel is called Engelberg versus Melchsee-Frutt. The goal of the competitors taking part in the duel on 4 lakes is to move the unofficial border stone. This happens on the famous 4-lake hike from Melchsee-Frutt to Engelberg. Engelberg belongs to the canton of Obwalden – but if you want to travel from there to the canton capital of Sarnen, you have to leave the canton. Reason: The commune of Engelberg is an enclave surrounded by the cantons of Nidwalden, Uri and Bern. Engelberg enjoys an international reputation as a tourist destination, mainly thanks to the Titlis area. On Titlis itself, the visitor enjoys a magnificent view, thanks to the glacier the summit remains white even in summer. The famous family of athletes Gisin hails from Engelberg along with sisters Michelle and Dominique, who won gold medals in alpine skiing at the Olympics. Former downhill star Dominique Gisin will lead the Engelberg team in a duel over four lakes.

Speaking of running shoes: Viktor Röthlin will also tie them for a special event on September 17th. Then Melchsee-Frutt will face Engelberg, and Viktor Röthlin will face Dominique Gisin (37) in the so-called four lakes duel. A marathon star and an Olympic downhill champion will lead a group of 100 runners. Röthlin starts with his group on Melchsee-Frutt, Gisin with his men on Trübsee. The route is 14.3 km long and passes the four mountain lakes Melchsee, Tannensee, Engstlensee and Trübsee. The team with the better overall results wins the duel – and thus decides where the unofficial landmark will be moved. In the first competition a year ago, Gisin and her group won with a difference of almost four meters. Can Röthlin’s syndrome get them back? The duel continues.

Relax after sports

It is as much a part of sport as it is of normal life: relaxation. After a 24-kilometer run with an elevation of 1,120 meters, former world-class runner and still well-trained athlete Viktor Röthlin also needs a rest. He gets them, for example, by entering Melchsee and cooling his legs.

Melchsee-Frutt offers many possibilities for relaxation. On beautiful sunny days, visitors can simply lie down in the meadow, with a bit of luck they will notice one of the bearded vultures high in the sky, which are regularly released here. There are also various fireplaces where you can grill yourself, in various restaurants guests can choose between fitness dishes or Ęlplermagronen for a hearty cordon bleu. And if you want to rest after a long hike, a hard run, or a hard week’s work, visit the spa at Frutt Mountain Resort, which offers a wonderful view of Melchsee and the mountains.
