At some point, everyone felt lonely. Especially in the summer, it can quickly seem as if everyone is invited to a barbecue party or a dance with their bests at a festival – though there are many people who feel lonely even in the warm months. We have tips to help.
The most common causes of loneliness
Why are you feeling lonely? Of course, all fates are different, but these four are the most common causes of loneliness:
New situations caused by life changes
Moving, new city, new job, new apartment: These changes are drastic and not always easy, especially at the beginning.
You can’t pull yourself together
When we are sad we are usually in no mood to meet other people and prefer to remain isolated from the rest of the world. It increases loneliness – and passivity.

Have a lot of followers on social media but still feel lonely? It is not the number of friends that matters, but the quality. Do you have someone in your life to talk to about your feelings and concerns?
The subjective thought of being completely different from others makes you feel lonely. Even heavy blows of fate give a feeling of loneliness in the world.
Whatever your reason for loneliness is, we have some tips to help.
1. Talk to someone
Even short meetings can help you fight loneliness. Offering help to others has a particularly positive effect on the mood – for example, when someone gets lost at a bus stop or cannot get a wheelchair in front of the stairs. “Can I help you?” It is a way of getting people to talk, be appreciated and do something good. Of course, deep friendships don’t develop overnight. But they are the beginning of a way out of loneliness and help fight feelings of isolation.
2. Nature and movement
Get out into nature as often as possible. This has a positive effect on mental health, promotes mindfulness and gives a sense of security when staying among trees, meadows and animals. Proper exercise during sports also helps to clear your head and build self-confidence.
3. Turn off the smartphone
The more lonely you feel, the more tempting it is to get lost in scrolling through Tiktok or 24/7 Instagram. This suggests closeness to other people, which unfortunately does not exist that way. The truth is, watching other people’s parties can often make you feel even more depressed and exhausted. Remember that not everyone is having a great time, even when trying to prove otherwise with their Instagram accounts.
4. Join clubs
Common commitment connects. If time permits, volunteering can help you fight loneliness. Pets, such as dogs, often make it easier to start a conversation with others. Just like team sports, pottery studios or the new yoga studio. Not sure how to connect? For example, there are groups on Facebook for people who have just moved to the city.
5. Enjoy your own company
You can feel lonely with your best friends, but feel safe alone in your own apartment. Being lonely does not necessarily mean loneliness. Become aware of your favorite pages and take care of yourself. Often these are the little things that we do well every day: set up a bouquet of flowers in the apartment, cook something nice for yourself, create a new playlist or drink coffee outside.
6. Open up
Even if it takes effort: give others an insight into your inner life and do not suffer in silence. Is there anyone you can confide in? If you are uncomfortable talking to friends or family, you may want to consider seeking psychotherapy or counseling. If you feel lonely for a long time, several weeks and you do not take or cannot take any action against it, it is certainly worth seeking professional help.
