Many companies are responding to labor shortages and accepting potential candidates. The return to the old employer is also becoming more and more important. However, it can also be profitable for professionals to move into lucrative assistant positions. WELT shows what they are.

Nnever before have there been as many vacancies in Germany as today – there are 1.74 million. In times of excessive demand and a shortage of skilled workers, companies need to be more involved in contacting potential applicants as well as judging those who once wrote the dismissal. The method of bringing former employees back into the company is known as “hiring boomerangs.”

About 39 percent. employees imagine such a return to their previous employer. This is the result of a survey conducted by research company Appinio on behalf of the Indeed job platform, which is exclusively available to WELT AM SONNTAG. 49 percent of 1,000 respondents aged 16 to 65 exclude return.

“The shortage of skilled workers requires new resources to recruit,” says Annina Hering, an economist at Indeed. Employers can keep in touch with former employees through social networks or graduate programs – and “ask from time to time” if they are open to return. Former employees would not always associate bad things with the old company – quite the contrary.

“An old employer means familiar routines and a familiar work environment that can be decisive in choosing a job,” says Hering. In practice, however, it is usually money that decides. According to the data, remuneration is the first condition for returning to work – for about 71 percent. is important or very important. Additional services follow 51 percent. Greater responsibility and other tasks are also irrelevant when switching back.

In general, the data shows that the motivation to return to the old employer decreases with age. At 59 percent, people between the ages of 55 and 65 are the age group that least imagines returning.

Younger generations are more open to returning to work: only about 29 percent of 16 to 24-year-olds refuse to return. The boys’ greater willingness to change jobs is also reflected in their lives. “Work biographies are increasingly characterized by changes in work and industry,” says Indeed. Younger workers in particular are open to return, so boomerang careers will appear even more frequently in the future, according to the findings of the study.

Helpers earn almost as much as professionals

A transition to an auxiliary job, i.e. a position that usually requires lower qualifications, can also be financially viable for skilled workers. It is true that trained professionals who make such a career change often face lower wages. However, a new study by the Institute for Labor Market Research and Occupations (IAB) shows that for around 15% of employee level.

This is especially true in low-wage sectors such as personal care, floristry, agriculture and animal husbandry, and catering. Here, the change can be especially profitable for employees. For example, body care professionals earn less than 1,700 euros, in gastronomy around 1,850 euros.

Professions that do not require training, but are much better paid, are found in industry and construction in particular. For example, in procurement and disposal and in the chemical industry, average wages of € 3101 or € 3113 are also attractive for ancillary activities. They almost reached the level of salaries of professionals in this industry, i.e. an average of 3,116 euros.

The fact that in some professions, such as catering, low wages are paid at the skilled worker level, makes these professions less attractive. ‘This can lead to a career change and thus a shortage of skilled workers in the sectors concerned or to further exacerbate existing bottlenecks,’ explains IAB researcher Doris Wiethölter. The study is based on data from Integrated Employment Biographies (IEB). This was used to examine the employment history of people who were employed subject to social security contributions in December 2020.

IAB experts calculate that employees who have learned the profession of personal care, for example, earn an average of 600 euros more after changing their careers to an assistant. There are also large differences in earnings in training professions such as floriculture and agriculture, by almost 400 and 300 euros more, respectively.
